A resolution from the Security Council has been leaked. It states that in order to fight against ISIL, the international community needs to cooperate with the Iraqi government. Sovereignty of the Iraqi state is to be respected:, foreign military intervention only if the state asks for it, the ancient borders are to be re-established no weapons distribution without their accordance.
Respecting the Iraqi sovereignty is great. However, the Iraqi state is a failed state. Is this state capable of administrating the country on its own… ?
Moreover, the resolution calls different Arab states to fight against ISIL via their existing religious institutions. This ignores the fact that Islamism is at the core of all those countries. Asking them to fight fire with fire is suicidal. Encouraging the spread of Islamism is irresponsible.
