There are confirmed reports that several German military staff have been kidnapped in the province of Kurdistan. They are part of a team of German specialists sent to train Kurdish pershmerga troops.
The German Ministry of Defense has issued a statement confirming the reports.
The number of those kidnapped is estimated by local journalists as six. Apparently they were en route from a military base to the Kurdish Regional Government Headquarter when they were attacked. Locals reported gunfire and helicopters approaching the scene shortly after.
Germany has been engaged in training Kurdish fighters for several months now, with a total of 40 military staff involved in the situation.
